- is a way of writing or speaking that is not meant to be taken literally
- creates vivid pictures in the reader’s mind in order to make writing more emotionally intense
- states ideas in new and unusual ways to satisfy the reader’s attention
Types of Figurative Language
Alliteration is the repetition of the same sound at the beginning of two or more words in sequence in a sentence.
Assonance (also called “vowel rhyme”) is the repetition of a similar vowel sounds within words in a sentence.
Hyperbole is the use of EXTREME exaggeration.
An idiom has a meaning that is not readily understood from the meaning of its individual words.
A metaphor compares two unlike things by describing one thing as if it were another.
Onomatopoeia is a word used to describe a sound. It imitates the sounds made by objects or actions.
Personification gives human qualities to inanimate objects, animals, and/or nature.
A simile compares two unlike things by using the key words “like” or “as”.
